The goal of Caltech’s Rideshare Program is to reduce the total number of vehicle
trips made to campus by faculty, staff and students. This goal serves the California
clean-air effort and reduces campus and community vehicle congestion.
Our programs and services are available to Caltech faculty, staff, and students.
Please continually visit our website for new information and detailed descriptions of what we have to offer.
An Employee Rideshare Information Center (ERIC) is located in the main lobby
of Keith Spalding Building, across from the Post Office. ERIC is supplied with transit maps and schedules,
bicycle safety information, carpool registration forms, as well as other relevant employee transportation information.

Guaranteed Ride Home
A common concern of those considering alternative transportation is what they
will do in the case of illness or emergency.
All registered carpool and vanpool participants, participants in the transit subsidy program
and individuals who walk or bike to Caltech may receive a Guaranteed Ride Home at no cost once every three months.
Carpooling
An employee carpool consists of at least two Caltech staff/student/faculty
or one Caltech staff/student/faculty and one JPL employee who lives outside of the "Caltech boundary" defined by the following roads: Del Mar, Catalina, Arden, Hill and California and who do not live in Caltech-owned housing. They must travel together the majority of their commute trips to Caltech and/or JPL and travel together for at least half of their commute distance.
Registered carpool vehicles may purchase a carpool parking permit at a reduced cost. The total cost of the permit is divided equally among the carpool participants. Parking in carpool spaces is on a first-come, first-served basis. Vehicles parked in carpool spaces must display a valid carpool permit.
Vanpooling
Although Caltech does not currently operate its own vans, we encourage the use of vanpools as an alternative
means to driving alone. A vanpool consists of at least six or more Caltech staff/student/faculty members
who live outside of the "Caltech boundary" defined by the following roads: Del Mar, Catalina, Arden, Hill and
California and who do not live in Caltech-owned housing.
They must travel together the majority of their commute trips to Caltech and/or JPL and travel together
for at least half of their commute distance.
Financial incentives preferential parking spaces are available for Caltech employees
who vanpool to work. Registered vanpool vehicles may obtain a parking permit
and park in reserved parking space at no cost. Vehicles parked in their designated vanpool space must display
a valid reserved parking permit.
If you are interested in vanpooling and would like to be part
of a vanpool please fill out the vanpool questionnaire and return to Kristina.Valenzuela@caltech.edu.
JPL Shuttle
A shuttle service is available for individuals traveling between JPL and Caltech.
The shuttle runs throughout the day, picking up at the west side of the Main Gate at JPL to the circular driveway on the north side of California, across from Keith Spalding parking lot. Please refer to the Personnel Directory for shuttle service times.
A JPL badge or Caltech identification is required and should be shown upon entering the shuttle.
For further information, call 818-354-7779 or 818-354-8513.
Bicycling and Walking
Caltech encourages walking and bicycling for transportation and recreational purposes.
Facilities for bicycle storage are located in various parts of the campus. Showers and lockers are available at the Braun Athletic Center for Caltech faculty, students, and staff. A Caltech identification card is required for use of the facility.
Transit Opportunities
Monthly subsidies, discounts, and incentives are available for Caltech faculty, students, and staff who choose to use public transit services, i.e. METRO, Foothill Transit, Metrolink, etc. Certain monthly transit passes can be purchased on-site at the Caltech Bookstore at the subsidized rate. Those individuals that purchase a monthly transit pass elsewhere can obtain their subsidy by presenting their pass and Caltech ID to our offices at 515 S. Wilson within 30 days of the expiration date of the pass.
For more information on transit lines, schedules, transfers, and subsidies, printed materials are available at ERIC in the Keith Spalding building or at our offices at 515 S. Wilson.

Alternative Work Schedules and Telecommuting
With the approval of your department supervisor and Human Resources, employees may be able to adjust their work schedules to meet bus schedules and coordinate with each other in ridesharing arrangements.
For those interested in this option, please discuss the feasibility of this option with your department supervisor. Approved flex-time and telecommuting arrangements may be documented and placed in an employee’s file in Human Resources.
